Whenever life gets chaotic, frustrating, or doesn’t seem to be making sense people always seem to find comfort in saying things like “trust in the universe” or “everything happens for a reason” – but why and how is it that these concepts help when clarity feels so far out of reach? Trusting in the universe is essentially another way of trusting in yourself; your gut and your intuition. It means taking the steps to patiently turn inward, self-reflect and allow space to be able to increase awareness.
It is not as if some outside force “the all and mighty universe” is going to magically fly down and save the day by eliminating or fixing all of life’s challenges (although that would be amazing, amiright?) This idea of “needing to be saved” by something else validates the idea that you alone cannot solve your problems and overcome obstacles; it also encourages dependent, weak, and disempowered narratives and can actually cause a deeper feeling of loss when the external force does not make all of your dreams come true. The universe is not there to “give you what you want” – instead the twists and turns of life show up to act as a guide to what you really need. The biggest hurdles in life often spark new inspiration, necessary change, and growth. Not getting what you want (or think you want) can be the greatest gift that has ever been given to you, although it is not always easy to see in the moment.
Life will always zig and zag, people will let you down, and opportunities will be missed – but the one constant that can always weather the storm is a deeply rooted connection with self. The truth is, approaching change takes an abundance of strength, patience, and the ability to learn by reflecting inward without judgement. Self-reflection helps to put things in perspective and refocus the direction of life; choosing this path can lead to a decrease in time wasted on wishing/wanting/hoping for something that was “thought” to be needed. Start by trusting in your own capabilities; when times are tough take a look inside and see the beauty of your own resilience knowing that the answers are already within yourself, you just have to discover them.
The process of becoming is a journey, not a destination. Trust yourself, trust your journey.
