Reflection

“Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards.” – Soren Kierkegaard

12 simple, yet true words. After seeing this quote I was inspired to create a sequence and playlist for my yoga classes this week themed around reflection. As the year comes to a close it is important to reflect back on the past 12 months like a film running through the mind. Check in with the events that were perspective changing; whether it be through joy or pain. Notice the moments that helped spark growth and expansion. Decide what is imperative to take along to the New Year and what absolutely needs to stay behind.

We are all in a constant state of becoming. Deeply rooted inner reflection is the most important piece to this process. It is the space we create for ourselves to understand mistakes, learn through experience, and continue to cultivate our own greatness. Turning inward can be a difficult task for most; it is not always easy to hold ourselves accountable in the process, however it is necessary for continued momentum. For me, it is most therapeutic to be in nature when I explore my thoughts and feelings; I’ve always felt a certain degree of magic in the way nature presents itself – authentic, unchanged, and without judgement. It is my goal to do the same when I reflect, journal, and meditate.

Reflection doesn’t have to be an individual experience. I have also found profound expansion by connecting with others and exploring how they see me, understand me, and learn from me. I’m always curious to learn and understand my own behavior on a more complex level and strive to show up in life as my most authentic self. It has been a challenge for me this past year to realize that my most authentic self can fluctuate due to weather, sickness, or stressful environments. It is most important for me to remember my path and my purpose when faced with trying times.

Whenever you feel lost, disconnected, or unmotivated come back to your center. Find a place that allows you to turn inward and truly reflect on your purpose. Find space to re-join yourself and reflect upon what is most important to you … then go out in the world and do it!
